FLOORING
With so many different types of flooring currently available to choose from, it is not immediately obvious which types are suitable for particular rooms in your home. Factors which may affect the suitability of a particular floor include things such as levels of traffic and moisture or temperature variations likely to be encountered.

Which floor should you choose?
- Laminate flooring is a watertight, glued HDF board or High Density Fibre Board. This is covered with a design layer and a transparent overlay which protects against wear and tear. Underneath, a barrier layer stops rising damp and prevents the boards from deforming.
- Solid wood flooring is made from a single piece of wood, typically 18-20mm thick. It is usually fitted using the tried and tested tongue-and-groove principal. All types of wood have a hardness score, which indicates how easily they can be damaged, dented or worn by everyday wear and tear. Solid wood flooring can be sanded back to restore the finish, the number of times is determined by how deep the tongue is set from the top of the board.
- Engineered flooring consists of three or four layers of wood, glued together at right angles to create a plank around 14mm thick. It has a real wood veneer of around 4mm thick on top, which means it can be sanded back and treated to restore the original finish if it becomes scuffed, worn or damaged.
- Vinyl flooring is a material made up of a mixture of polyvinyl chloride and plasticizers. Pigments are added for color. Vinyl flooring is usually flexible, fine textured, and appears to be relatively non-porous. These floors are suitable for absolutely any area of the home. Their complete resistance to moisture means that they are suitable for use in bathrooms, kitchens, utility rooms and even wet-rooms and poolside areas if desired.

A good underfloor heating system, either electric or hot water based, is a great heating method for wooden floors as well, giving plenty of comfort for living and a pleasantly warm floor underfoot. All good quality flooring is highly suitable to be used together with underfloor heating.
